Ocean Activities on Kauai

If you happen to be visiting Hawaii between December and late March, you can make your stay extra memorable with a humpback whale sighting. During these winter months, about two-thirds of the North Pacific humpback population can be found in the waters around Hawaii, especially in the ‘Au‘au Channel between Lana‘i and Maui. These whales have become accustomed to staying in Hawaii because of its appealingly warm and shallow waters.

The best way to to experience Kauai whale watching is from a boat deck—although boats have to stay 100 yards back, that’s still close enough for a sight you’ll never forget. During your trip you may see the whales surface, slap their tails or blow their spouts while they engage in whale song and other activities below water. These kinds of tours are great for humpback whales, as they are especially known for being approachable and curious.

You might also catch a glimpse from a few different points on our island, including Poipu Beach Park, just a short distance from the hotel. Other options, depending on where you might be headed to during the day, include the Kiluea Lighthouse, Kalalau Trail and Kapaa Overlook, for a scenic point that would be worth visiting on any trip through the area.
